This was confirmed by the Vermont Department of Health late this afternoon. Our team has met with the Vermont Department of Health to review the case and prepare our response. The individual who tested positive was considered infectious while at school during the week of Oct. 19. There is no indication this case is a result of transmission from our previous identified case. We have shared all critical information with the Vermont Department of Health regarding potential close contacts. It is likely they will not begin reaching out to those individuals until tomorrow. They will contact all staff and families whose students are potentially impacted. Since the contact tracing has just begun today for staff associated with grade 5 and for one classroom, all students in grade 5 will remain in remote instruction on Monday. We will continue to work with the Department of Health to assess the situation and determine if we are able to staff those 5th-grade classrooms not directly impacted. No 5th-grade students will be at school tomorrow. We still plan to go forward with in-person instruction for students in pre-k, kindergarten, grade 3 (added today), as well as grades 4 & 6. It is the Vermont Department of Health that identifies those who may have been exposed to the virus. They assure us that they will make these contacts within 24 hours. If you are not contacted within the 24-hour window starting today at 5:00, it is because your child is not considered a close contact. We know that the last potential exposure at school occurred on Friday, October 23. This is important because it establishes the timeline for quarantining of close contacts. The Vermont Department of Health contact tracer will explain this to each individual family impacted. Due to medical privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about this case. Although we are already at day nine, from the last potential date of exposure at school, families should continue to monitor their students for COVID symptoms daily. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. Some have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Parents and guardians of students or staff exhibiting symptoms are asked to contact their family physician, the Vermont Department of Health, and the school nurse. As always, the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is our top priority. At this time, we ask our community for compassion and understanding for all who may be impacted by this virus. Please do not speculate, ask, post on social media -- it is important to respect the privacy of our community. We will be following up tomorrow with 5th-grade parents as to plans for the rest of the week. Likewise, we are hopeful that we will have first and second-grade classrooms return to in-person instruction as we receive verification of test results. We are still closely monitoring our previous case and now this situation. We will communicate with you to provide the latest and most accurate information, as it becomes available. You can view the COVID-19 Symptomatic and Positive Case Guide for further information about the process. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, John A. If the test result is positive, the asymptomatic student/staff must stay home (quarantine) for 14 days or, if they continue to be asymptomatic, can be tested on day 7 and if negative, can return to school/work. This guidance comes from the Vermont Department of Health and is endorsed by our local pediatricians and physicians. *exposure/travel: had close contact (within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes) with a person with confirmed COVID-19; or traveled to or lived in an area where the local or state health department is reporting large number of cases of COVID-19. https://accd.vermont.gov/COVID-19/restart/cross-state-travel . High-risk travel also includes travel to a “green” area via public transportation (e.g. airplane, bus).
